Falcons and Wasps lead the way with English Players

Supporting the English cause – Falcons and Wasps lead the way

Newcastle Falcons and London Wasps, who finished second bottom and second league table, both fielded the most English players last season during the Premiership regular season, the Falcons 36 and Wasps 32

Wasps 32 was out of a total of 40 and the Falcons 36 was out of a total of 45 with both sides fielding the same percentage, 80

Of the 32 Wasps used seven of them under 22 and the Falcons two more at eight but the leaders in players under 22 was Gloucester with an impressive nine out of the 42 players they used during the season

The two English sides who reached the semi finals of the Heineken Cup had the lowest number of young players, both Saracens and London Irish fielded just five players under 22, one fewer than Bath and Sale Sharks

Ironically London Irish also fielded the fewest players over 30 with just six.

Sale Sharks had the fewest English players, 23, and the lowest percentage at 51

In total there were 322 English players in the Premiership out of the 503 players who played some part, an average of 64%

There were 84 players under 22 given a chance during the season which is 17%, later in the summer we will compare these figures to the French Top 14, Italian Super 10, Celtic League and Super 14, should make interesting reading!
